Fall Ramble for Members (and their guests)

Location: Beech Haven estate

Date / Time: 11/22/2015 2:00 PM

Please join us on Sunday, November 22nd, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Beech Haven estate for our Fall Ramble. Hidden within a forest off the Atlanta Highway at the Middle Oconee River, the 80-acre estate contains an abandoned summer house and the remains of a garden built circa 1910 as a summer retreat for the Rowland family. Our tour guides will be Helen and Nat Kuykendall and Lucy Rowland.

The property is a unique model of the Arts and Crafts movement (1870-1920. The two-story hand-hewn house designed by Effie Rowland includes fireplaces made of stones from the Oconee and a porch fountain fed by a nearby spring. The Asian-influenced garden elements were made by her husband, Charles, who was influenced by designs he'd seen in his work supporting Presbyterian foreign missions.

A Bridge at Beech Haven

Though acquired by Athens-Clarke County several years ago, the property still needs stabilization of bridges and the house, and is not yet open to the public. Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation is leasing the property to oversee these preservation efforts, which are still in process.

Helen Kuykendall notes that "November is a great time to tour the estate. Many of the garden remnants are more apparent after the leaves drop."

Participants in the Ramble must be able to walk on uneven, unpaved terrain. They should wear sturdy walking shoes and bring drinking water, and be aware there is no water or bathrooms at the site.

This event is free to all Athens Historical Society members, and any guests they choose to invite, however an RSVP is absolutely required, as space is limited. To reserve your space, contact AHS Board member Kevin Garrison via email (kbg1976@gmail.com) or phone (706-207-1550) no later than Monday, November 2nd, to provide your contact information and be added to the list.

We will email participants with specific directions and parking information before the Ramble. In case of rain, the ramble will be rescheduled.
