May Program: Artist Philip Juras on Painting Bartram's Georgia

Location: Georgia Museum of Art

Date / Time: 5/18/2014 3:00 PM

Please join us to hear Athens-based artist Philip Juras present a program about the paintings in his exhibition, The Southern Frontier: Landscapes Inspired by Bartram's Travels.

As described on the artist's website, Juras "combines direct observation with historical, scientific, and natural history research to depict, and in some cases re-create, landscapes as they appeared in the 1770s.  The paintings bring the long lost southern frontier to 21st century eyes..."

The Southern Frontier exhibition has over 60 landscape paintings, and is currently on view at the Telfair Academy in Savannah until Thursday, May 8, 2014, when it will move to the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta from Wednesday, May 28 through August 14, 2014.

Locally, two paintings by Mr. Juras are currently part of the exhibition Terrain: Painting the South at The Classic Center in downtown Athens through Monday, September 15, 2014, and his painting Rock and Shoals Flatrock is on exhibition at the Athens Chamber of Commerce building at 246 W. Hancock Street.

Mr. Juras will speak in the M. Smith Griffith Auditorium at the Georgia Museum of Art on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at 3:00PM. A wine reception will follow, and this event is free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you there!
